Few would expect the inconspicuous building opposite the Nový Smíchov shopping centre to conceal the only modern synagogue in Prague and the last large synagogue in the Czech Republic built before World War II. It consists of two parts: a longitudinal Neo-Romanesque three-nave synagogue from 1863 and a Functionalist two-storey extension from 1931 designed by Leopold Ehrmann. However, for a significant part of its existence it did not actually serve religious purposes. It is currently used as an archive by the Jewish Museum in Prague.
