overview programme about the place The Mirror Chapel, adorned with an intricate interior and an unparalleled arrangement of mirrors, graces the fourth courtyard of the Klementinum on the ground floor of the wing connecting the Astronomical Tower to the northern wing of the college along Platnéřská Street. It serves as a regular venue for classical music concerts, cultural and social gatherings, and even weddings. In the antechamber of the Mirror Chapel stands an over-life-size bust of W. A. Mozart by Emanuel Max. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756—1791) first visited the Klementinum on 13 January 1787, and returned several more times. During one of his visits, students from the local general seminary reportedly played one of his symphonies for him, and Mozart reciprocated with a performance of his own. Its construction was undertaken at the expense of the Latin Major Marian Congregation between 1722 and 1726. The architect’s identity remains uncertain, with attributions pointing towards either František Maxmilián Kaňka or Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. The chapel’s ceiling bears a magnificent five-part fresco painted in 1723 by Jan Hiebel, drawing inspiration from the Ave Maria prayer. Thematically aligned with the life of the Virgin Mary are four oil paintings by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. Among the chapel’s unique furnishings are a pair of Baroque organs, masterpieces of 18th-century craftsmanship. The original organ, dating back to 1732 and crafted by organ builder Tomáš Schwarz, occupies the choir loft. In the 1950s, a Baroque organ originally from the church in Svatobor u Doupova was installed in place of the main altar, which had been lost following the secularisation of 1784. Access to the chapel is provided through a Classicist annexe designed by Matyáš Hummel, whose construction addressed the building’s structural integrity. Thanks to its extraordinary interior, featuring a captivating blend of marble, mirrors, gilded stucco ornamentation, frescoes, and paintings, the Mirror Chapel is one of Klementinum’s most treasured gems.
