Today’s appearance of Vítězné náměstí Square was determined by architect Antonín Engel, who won an architectural competition for a new urban design of the area in 1920. The economic crisis, however, disrupted his grand vision and today’s form is a mere torso of the planned project. One of the completed buildings is the General Staff of the Army of the Czech Republic, a monumental neoclassical building from 1937. The basement spaces were lined with granite slabs, and it was equipped with a modern boiler room, coal transporter, pipe mail, shelter, armoured hall and the still functional orbital elevator.
