Kostel sv. Apolináře

The octagonal tower of the Gothic Church of St. Apollinaire standing on Větrov hill is a prominent landmark in the southern part of Nové Město, visible from afar. The Roman Catholic church was founded by Charles IV in the second half of the 14th century as the centre of an imaginary cross connecting the churches and monasteries he had founded in Nové Město: the Church of St. Catherine, the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary at Trávníček, the monastery at Slovany and the Church of the Virgin Mary and St. Charles the Great at Karlov. The single-nave church with a pentagonal presbytery first underwent two waves of Baroque conversion, with the Gothic aspect being partially restored at the end of the 19th century. The most valuable of the Baroque features is the painting of the Virgin Mary of Karlov by the painter Jan Jiří Heinsch. The church is currently used by the Vietnamese Roman Catholic parish.
