Boromejská zahrada

Borromeo Garden has been undergoing gradual renovation since 2021. Next to the Hospital of the Sisters of Mercy of St Charles Borromeo in Prague, there is a space where patients and their loved ones can enjoy silence, meditation and relaxation. Patients in beds or wheelchairs can also now some rest in the garden. The sunny setting in this peaceful spot below Petřín helps in the treatment of the hospital's patients, but can also be enjoyed by visitors and the general public during social and cultural events.

history

In the 16th century, small houses were built on the site of the medieval vineyards belonging to the Strahov Premonstratensians, mostly used for farming purposes. Only one of them, later assigned house number 337, has survived to this day. This house was bought by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Charles Borromeo in 1842, with the intention of building a large hospital complex on plots 336 and 337. The garden of house No. 337 was about 2 morgens (old unit) in size and was enclosed by a wall. On the west it bordered the garden of Lord Ottenkon, on the east it bordered the garden of the house belonging to the Ladies’ Association and the garden of the Wallachian Hospital. Construction of the facility was completed in 1854 and it began to serve as a hospital for women. Once the buildings were completed, the gardens, which had suffered greatly from the construction works, were landscaped. The paths were improved and the dirt that had been dug up was partially hauled away for vegetable beds. Several water pools were also created and a larger greenhouse was built. The garden served as an important supply of vegetables and fruit for the nurses and the hospital.

In 1952, the hospital was forcibly nationalised and converted to the Pod Petřínem University Hospital, while the nurses were mostly relocated to the borderlands. The construction company built facilities in part of the garden. The removal of the sheds left behind dead soil in the hospital garden with a rubble mound and broken drainage system from the Petřín galleries.

When totalitarianism ended, the Sisters of the Borromeo order returned to continue their mission, with God’s help…
