28 crosses

share

The 28 crosses in front of the Old Town Hall commemorate the execution of the lords of Bohemia. There were originally only 27 of them on the square. However, in June 2011, the Ztohoven art group added another cross. They did so to honour the memory of the sadly overlooked Martin Fruwein of Podolí, who probably committed suicide before his execution, and so it was his corpse that was beheaded on 21 June 1621. Some historians claim that the placement of the 28th cross is justified, as there were in fact 28 Bohemian lords and not 27.
