Prague Castle — Imperial Stables

To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Prague Castle Administration, in collaboration with the Military History Institute Prague and the Central Military Archive, has prepared an extensive exhibition that will guide visitors through all the significant milestones of the greatest armed conflict in human history. Nearly 100 original wartime posters and proclamations will be displayed alongside unique three-dimensional exhibits.

World War II posters are not only historical testimony, but also fascinating examples of propaganda. The paper poster played a crucial role as a cheap, accessible, and highly effective tool of mass communication. From the outset, war posters were closely tied to political propaganda. The demonization of the enemy was intended to incite anger and a desire for retribution. German wartime propaganda became especially adept at distorting reality, presenting clear defeats as tactical victories. In contrast, Allied wartime posters were factual, comprehensible, and avoided excessive exaggeration.

Even today, these posters remain powerful. They are not only a visual imprint of the time, but also a psychological tool that has managed to influence public opinion with its suggestive power. Their ability to spread rapidly and outlast radio broadcasts or newspaper report, ensured their lasting place in the story of war.
